Balloon catheter A tube with a balloon at its tip for dilating arteries, used in angioplasty
Barium Dense, radiopaque liquid suspension used as contrast agent in some gastrointestinal x-ray studies
Biocompatibility The quality of not having toxic or injurious effects on biological function
Biomaterials Any substance, synthetic or natural, that can be used as a system or part of a system that treats, augments, or replaces any tissue, organ, or function of the body
Biopsy Procurement of a small sample of tissue for analysis
Biopsy channel Hollow passage in endoscope through which instruments can be passed to perform biopsy or deliver treatment
Biotechnology The industrial use of living organisms (or parts of living organisms) to make or modify products, improve plants or animals, or develop microorganisms for specific uses
Blood glucose monitor A device that quantitatively measures glucose concentrations in the blood
Body orifice Any natural opening in the body, as well as the external surface of the eyeball, or any permanent artificial opening, such as a stoma
Bougie A tapering or cylindrical instrument introduced into a tubular passage of the body, such as the oesophagus, for the purpose of dilating or narrowing
Brachytherapy Placement of a radioactive source in or near tissue to deliver radiation therapy
